How many people are hungry in America?

From Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization:

  • According to the USDA, more than 38 million people, including 12 million children, in the United States are food insecure
  • A household that is food insecure has limited or uncertain access to enough food to support a healthy life.
  • In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, unemployment and food insecurity soared. In 2021, 53 million people turned to food banks and community programs for help putting food on the table.
  •  Cook County has the 3rd highest number of food insecure persons in the United States
  • 1 in 3 people facing hunger are unlikely to qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly Food Stamps)
  • Hunger in African AmericanLatino, and  Native American communities is higher because of systemic racial injustice. To achieve a hunger-free America, we must address the root causes of hunger and structural and systemic inequities.

What can I do to help?

Advocate. Donate. Volunteer.  There are many ways to help fight hunger in your community, and these three are simple to remember and yet incredibly impactful.  Every gift, no matter how small makes a difference.  Every post about anti-hunger policy spreads awareness and inspires others to take action. Every hour of time you spend volunteering supports our mission and impacts your community.
