AmeriCorps: Pantry Supervisor

Job Summary:
Food insecurity is largely a logistics problem. There is food waste, and there are people who are unable to afford the groceries they need to feed themselves and their families. Every month we do our part to solve that logistics problem by distributing over 80,000 pounds of food per month to 1,100 families across our programs. The Program Supervisor plays a crucial role in our food procurement model, running much of the Pantry’s day-to-day operations, including taking inventory, working with volunteers, and preparing the food pantry for it’s twice-weekly distributions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage and train volunteers to collect, sort, re-package, and display food for distribution
- Help identify new food rescue opportunities (work with local vendors to obtain usable products that would normally be discarded)
- Arrange with vendors and volunteers to transport and secure food, following organizational procedures and safe food handling
- Troubleshoot problems with partners and volunteers as they arise
- Assist with the inventory and ordering of food on a weekly basis, adhering to a monthly budget
- Manage the inventory process prior to and following distributions
- Coordinate logistics for food drives, and work with community partners to ensure success
- Partner with on-staff dietitians to come up with creative uses for difficult to move food products
- Supervise Pantry operations during food distributions
- Ensure Pantry is set up as necessary for volunteer shifts, distribution
- Maintain a sanitary work environment in preparation for visits from health inspectors
- Attend training and community meetings as appropriate
- Assume additional responsibilities or duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma with 2 years’ relevant experience minimum. College Degree and related experience in nutrition preferred
- Food sanitation licensure preferred (or willingness and ability to achieve it once hired—fees paid by the Pantry)
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Must be a team-player and detail-oriented
- Ability to work under pressure and with a wide variety of people
- Valid driver’s license preferred
- Bi-lingual skills (English/Spanish) are a plus
Member Status and Hours: Full-time AmeriCorps Member; 1700 hours to be completed within contracted timeframe. Routine schedule is Monday through Friday but must be willing to work occasional evening or weekend hours.
Environment: Multi-level work area: administrative offices/work space not fully accessible to the mobility impaired. Must be physically capable of walking up and down stairs and be able to lift 40 pounds. Benefits:
- Living Allowance: $13,732 to be distributed in equal allotments every two weeks within the contract term.
- Education Award: Upon successful completion of the member's term of service, the member will receive an education award from the National Service Trust in the amount of $5,730.
