AmeriCorps team honors Martin Luther King, Jr. through service

Our AmeriCorps members are making a tremendous difference in the lives of others—committing an entire year in service to making sure everyone has the food they need. We are proud to have each of these passionate and talented individuals on our team. These are the voices of our future. On this day when we honor the world-changing work of Martin Luther King Jr, we want to amplify the voices of these future leaders.

Today I honor the countless people, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who fought for equal rights for Black Americans. I also take this day to be grateful for the people who have continued Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and are protecting the rights of all marginalized communities.

To me MLK day is a reminder to never forget the past nor ever stop working towards a society that is equal to all individuals. Dr. King highlights the significance in resistance to white supremacy, a deep-rooted problem that is the foundation of what America was built on. Dr. King has shown me the beauty in resistance to your oppressor, because the greatest turning points in history are when the people are united.

MLK Day to me has always been important. Not only does it bring attention to a wonderful activist and leader for the black community, but the day is also an opportunity to give back to the community as well. I believe, this year specifically; this day resonates with me even more because of all of the obstacles and challenges we've had to overcome together. We needed to come together as a community more than ever this past year and I am grateful to be able to contribute myself and give back. If you have an opportunity to volunteer this MLK day you should you will definitely put a smile on someone's face for your efforts!
