Beyond Hunger's mission is harnessing the power of communities to end hunger. An award-winning direct service agency, we serve residents of 13 zip codes on the West Side of Chicago and surrounding suburbs. Last year we provided critical food assistance and programming to over 52,000 individuals. Our energetic and fulfilling work environment is resourced by an operating budget of $3 million, 17 full-time staff, 4 part-time staff, 1 full-time AmeriCorps member, over 1300 active volunteers--and possibly you.

We are seeking someone as passionate as we are about ending hunger. By helping us reduce the food access barriers to quality and nutritious food, this is your opportunity to play a vital role in creating a hunger-free community. Established in 2016, Beyond Hunger's Home Delivery program mission is focused on supporting neighbors who have difficulty visiting our physical food pantry. The program currently services 350 households each month in the Oak Park, River Forest and Austin neighborhood of Chicago (60651/60644).

Reports to: Programs Manager

Supervises: Volunteers/Interns as requested

Status: Part-time, hourly. $18.50 per hour and based on no more than 25 hours per week. Likely a Monday-Thursday schedule.

Job Summary: The Home Delivery Assistant delivers packaged groceries to homebound older adults and disabled adults in the West Suburbs and Chicago's Austin community. They will unload purchased food from grocery stores and businesses to help increase our food inventory for clients. They will support the Programs Coordinator as we prep and provide free groceries to older adults in the community.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Load, unload, and deliver packaged groceries to homebound clients living in Chicago's Austin neighborhood, Oak Park, River Forest, and nearby west suburban communities.
  • Operate a delivery van to transport food pick-ups and participant deliveries (no experience driving a van required).
  • Foster positive relationships with clients when delivering groceries in-person and taking grocery orders over the phone.
  • Instruct volunteers and delivery partners and delivery drivers regarding home delivery protocols, as assigned.
  • Support the Home Delivery program by co-leading volunteer shifts, both virtually and in-person.
  • Ensure accurate stock inventory through daily and monthly tracking.
  • Regularly communicate and update any changes to participant information, such as phone numbers and addresses.
  • Monitor grocery orders daily via Google Sheets and Salesforce.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be able to life more than 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform all duties associated with a physically strenuous position.
  • Ability to stay calm, communicate effectively, and resolve issues during shifts.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with and encourage interaction between people of all ages and abilities.
  • Knowledge of Oak Park, River Forest, and Chicago's Austin neighborhood highly preferred.
  • Driver's License required.
  • Bi-lingual skills (English/Spanish) are a plus.
  • Residents living in Chicago's Austin neighborhood are encouraged to apply.
